Abstract:
; As the acquisition of knowledge is closely linked to language, insufficient language competences constitute a major obstacle to successful subject teaching and learning. Therefore, language-sensitive biology classes are required, which, aside from transmitting subject-specific contents, also recognize the (academic) language development of learners as a crucial educational aim. In the context of inquiry-based learning, the text type test protocols is considered as being beneficial not only to students’ scientific thinking but also to the usage of academic language structures. This paper intends to identify the challenges learners face when they are expected to use academic language in their protocols. For this purpose, 48 test protocols written by students of two Viennese secondary schools have been analyzed with a tool (Müllner/Möller angenommen) designed to measure the linguistic and subject-specific qualities of this text type. The different elements of these test protocols were examined on a lexical-semantic, syntactical and textual level and the data gained was subsequently replenished with a qualitative evaluation of sample texts. The results indicate that obstacles have to be anticipated on each of the mentioned linguistic levels, whereby relations between the academic language competences and the sub-competences in scientific inquiry have been found. Furthermore, the results imply that second language learners in particular need to be acquainted with the academic register as well as with the impersonal style of test protocols. Based on these findings, ideas for a language-sensitive teaching of this scientific text type and appropriate scaffolds have been presented. It seems vital to convey the components and the linguistic features of test protocols not only explicitly but also in a functional way in order to enhance students’ genre knowledge.
